Patients and staff at Yeovil Hospital are set to enjoy a variety of food and drink-themed events this week as Nutrition and Hydration Week gets under way.

The national campaign, which runs from Monday 14 to Friday 18 March, highlights the importance of good nutrition at all stages of life, from infancy to old age. The week also recognises the impact social isolation has on nutritional intake, especially in the elderly.

Visitors to the hospital will be able to find out more information from the stands in main reception and the Canteen, with quizzes, leaflets and free water on ‘Thirsty Thursday’ kindly donated by Danone.

Staff from the hospital’s dietetics team will also be running an afternoon tea party in the medically fit for discharge ward on Wednesday 16 March, to encourage patients, staff and visitors to interact and socialise to help combat the feelings of isolation experienced by many while in hospital.

The week ends with ‘Fruity Friday’ which will see patients on the hospital’s children’s ward enjoying fruit kebabs and smoothies while local green grocer Lily Brettell will be running her regular fruit and vegetable stall in the hospital foyer. There will also be a fruit offer running in the Canteen restaurant.

Head of dietetics Alison Kyle said: “Good nutrition and hydration are always important and that is especially true when you are in hospital as it can have a huge impact on your recovery. We hope that during this week of events patients, visitors and staff will enjoy getting involved.”
