Dr Khalid Rashed, Consultant in Stroke Services at Yeovil Hospital, has been recognised with an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list for services to stroke care in Somerset. Dr Rashed’s colleagues nominated him for the Honour, which came as a big surprise to the consultant, who has worked at the hospital for over twenty years.

The Queen’s Birthday Honours list, published on Friday 16 June 2017, recognises over 130 people for their contribution to education, children’s services and equality.

Congratulations have been pouring in via social media from patients and patients’ relatives as well as colleagues and wider Yeovil Hospital staff, with compliments given on the stroke specialist’s approachability and particularly caring approach.

Dr Rashed said, “It was a very pleasant surprise and I was shocked when I heard. My wife was even more excited than me! It is a very nice thing for the hospital and for Somerset, and it’s the team really who’ve done all the work. In my 23 years at Yeovil Hospital, I have seen advancements improve quality of care for stroke patients; we have always embraced new treatments and strived to provide the best possible care for patients.”

Caroline Smith, nurse consultant in Yeovil Hospital’s stroke care team and colleague to Dr Rashed, was part of the team who submitted the nomination for the honour.

Having worked with Dr Rashed for thirteen years, Caroline said “He is somebody who works over and above the expectations of his role. Dr Rashed is extremely passionate and supportive of the stroke service – his biggest attribute is his approachability. Since he’s been at the hospital, we have become known as an exemplar in how to run stroke services in a smaller hospital. This involves services across the whole Trust contributing to improved care for each and every patient, from stroke specific physiotherapy to clinical research.”

Caroline Collins, relative of a former patient, said, “[This is] so well deserved, a lovely man for whom nothing is too much trouble, no question about his patients care too trivial. Many congratulations to him and the team who work tirelessly to provide such high standards of care and rehabilitation.”
