Yeovil Hospital Charity is celebrating another milestone in their appeal to raise £2 million for the area’s first dedicated Breast Cancer Unit. A small group of the charity’s most active supporters came together to unveil the new total on the giant fundraising thermometer outside the front of the hospital.
James Kirton, Head of Fundraising said, “Our supporters have achieved this despite a pandemic and all the restrictions this brings to fundraising. I want to say a particular thanks to all of those people who managed to keep the total going up during the last twelve months. We have had people shaving their hair, jumping from planes, running around their garden and many more unusual and personal challenges. It is so exciting to be getting closer but the last bit is always the most difficult and £300,000 is still a huge amount for our local community to come up with. We therefore need everyone to get stuck in and do something for the appeal. All the little things really add up so get together with a few friends and see what you can come up with!”
Maggie Hague, a member of the appeal’s Fundraising Group and one of the charity’s most valued volunteers was there to help reveal the new total. “It is so great to be involved in something so worthwhile. A dedicated unit is so badly needed and I know that once it has been built, it will make a massive difference to breast cancer patients.”
Another member of the Fundraising Group that came along to help update the giant fundraising thermometer was Karina Parsons, who is involved in a huge range of fundraising activities, including selling donated items on eBay for the appeal. Karina is also excited about the prospect of a new unit and said. “Having been through breast cancer, I feel it’s important to have a dedicated area so that patients feel reassured during such a difficult period by being around other people that understand.” The new unit will include its own dedicated waiting area, two consultation rooms, rooms for scans and rooms for difficult conversations.
Yeovil Hospital Charity is hoping to launch its annual fun run, the Fun5k very soon and it is hoped this will bring them closer to their final target of £2 million. The event will take place in September and will be launched on the charity’s social media channels later this month.
