Returning to nursing practice

We are working with the University of West of England to provide courses that assist you in returning to practice. The course consists of approximately 150 hours of clinical placement time in the hospital, depending on the length of time you have been out of practice and the necessary academic studies that go alongside. This training can be undertaken in a full time or part time capacity. Six days will be at the University with additional blended learning days such as seminars and tutorials.

It is expected that returnees attend all taught sessions. Elements of the taught days are:

  • Professional and ethical practices
  • Patient safety
  • Quality care
  • Reflective practice
  • Changing face of health care provision
  • Resilience and personal action planning
  • Study skills

Successful completion of the Return to Practice programme includes achieving the NMC competency standards in the placement, which will be assessed and your competency signed off, completion of a portfolio, a 2,000 word reflective assignment and an additional numeracy assessment.

Once you have passed the academic assessment and completed the practice requirements you will be eligible to go back on the NMC register.

Who is Return to Practice for?

If you were a registered nurse but have had a break, then Return to Practice is the option for you. In order to be eligible you must have held NMC registration previously, which has lapsed.
