Museum-quality contemporary art is brightening the walls for patients, staff and visitors at Yeovil Hospital.

National charity Paintings in Hospitals has collaborated with the Arts Council collection to tour an exhibition entitled ‘Rooted in the Landscape’ to hospitals across South West England.

Rooted in the Landscape explores the relationship between art, wellbeing and the natural environment. Featuring works by artists including Andy Goldsworthy, Marc Quinn and Turner Prize-nominated Janice Kerbel, the exhibition is specifically designed for healthcare settings.

Yeovil Hospital Arts Co-ordinator Caroline Barnes said: “It is always wonderful when we get these opportunities to display such high quality pieces or art in out outpatients department. We are delighted to be one of the venues for this tour and already the artwork as encouraged conversation with both patients and staff.”

Through painting, photography and printmaking, the exhibition explores personal relationships with the rural environment and asks the viewer to consider the positive influence and therapeutic benefits the outdoors can have on wellbeing.

Amisha Karia, Head of Collection, Loans and Programming at Paintings in Hospitals, said: “It has been a thrilling and rewarding process to develop this exhibition with the Arts Council Collection. Rooted in the Landscape will be installed for several months at each of the selected hospitals in the South West.

“We hope the exhibition will stimulate further discussions with patients and care staff about their perspectives on landscape and its effects on their health and wellbeing.”
