The Pre Assessment Clinic is located on level 3 and aims to ensure that you are adequately prepared for your elective surgery. It is staffed by a senior sister, five staff nurses and two part time administrators under the guidance of a Consultant Anaesthetist. The team works closely with the Anaesthetic Department, Surgeons and GPs.

During your visit to the Pre Assessment Clinic, staff will take a medical history, measure your height, weight, blood pressure, check your airway (neck and mouth opening) and, if necessary, examine your heart and lungs. All patients require screening for MRSA to prevent cross infection. A urine test is also required.
Other investigations may be ordered if needed such as an ECG (electronic recording of your heart), blood tests, Echocardiogram (scan) of heart and lung function tests. If there is a complex medical background, a consultant anaesthetic appointment may be necessary. Depending on the type of surgery you are having, you may need to complete a questionnaire.
Nutritional Drinks
You maybe given four nutritional drinks to take home to consume over two days before your operation. The drinks assist the response to pre-operative fasting and assist recovery.
