Gynaecology Outpatients

The Gynaecology Outpatients Department is situated in Yeovil Women’s Hospital which is part of Yeovil Hospital. The clinics run on weekdays with the consultant and their team in attendance. There will also be designated trained nurses and experienced health care assistants on duty.

At your first consultation as a patient you may need to be examined. You may not necessarily be seen by the consultant, but by one of the team who will report to the consultant to make any necessary decisions. The phone number for the Gynaecology outpatients department (weekdays) is 01935 384411.

Colposcopy Unit

Our Colposcopy Unit, which provides diagnostic services for patients, is based on the First Floor of the Women’s Hospital. The contact number is 01935 384 622.

Jasmine Ward

Jasmine is a ward situated in the Women’s Hospital, specialising in mainly gynaecology. Staff care for ladies undergoing elective surgery, emergency cases from Accident and Emergency, and ladies experiencing problems in early pregnancy up to 20 weeks’ gestation.

Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic (EPAC)

The loss of a pregnancy or baby at any stage throughout your pregnancy can be devastating for both parents.

Sadly a miscarriage occurs in 1 in 4 pregnancies. A miscarriage is the loss of a pregnancy during the first 24 weeks. We recommend that if you are experiencing pain, bleeding or spotting, loss or pregnancy symptoms, if you have previously had an ectopic pregnancy, or have sharp one-sided pain and/or pain in your shoulders, or feel very faint or dizzy that you contact your GP, Community Midwife or Emergency Department who will refer you to EPAC if required.

You may also be referred to this clinic if you are pregnant and have previously had an ectopic pregnancy or tubal surgery.

If you are experiencing these symptoms it doesn’t always mean that you will miscarry but we do recommend that you are referred to our Early Pregnancy Assessment Clinic who will see women between 6-15 weeks of pregnancy. If you are experiencing any heaving bleeding or more pain that you can cope with please attend the Emergency Department.

Sometimes you may have attended for a scan and be told you have suffered a missed miscarriage and not experienced any symptoms at all.

Gynaecology Assessment Unit (GAU)

GAU is an emergency gynaecology service working seven days per week seeing women with any gynaecology emergencies including early pregnancy. Patients will be referred through the Emergency Department or through your GP.

Gynaecology cancer diagnostic and treatment services

Yeovil Hospital offers diagnostic services in the care of women with suspected cancer and treatment for low grade malignancy as specified in the South West network guidelines.

The team comprises two gynaecology consultants (Mrs Lydia Karamura and Mrs Krishna Murala), consultant radiologist, consultant histopathologist, a clinical nurse specialist and links with the gynaecology oncology team at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, for the planning of patient care.

The service offers diagnostic radiological investigations as well as clinical assessment to make diagnosis of cancer. The team meets regularly to review the findings for all new patients and links in with the Musgrove Park Multidisciplinary team.

Low grade cancer will be operated on locally by the in-house gynaecologists and high grade cancers or more complex cases will receive further treatment by specialists at Musgrove Park Hospital.

There are support services for women with previous diagnosis of cancer or undergoing treatment supported by our clinical nurse specialist.

In addition to clinical care, the unit works closely with the Yeovil Hospital research department to participate in national cancer research studies and trials to inform future cancer care.

Urogynaecology and Urodynamics

We offer a urogynaecology service which provides care for women with urinary incontinence and complex pelvic floor weakness/prolapse. Clinics are held in the women’s hospital. The Lead Consultant for Urogynaecology is Mrs Fatima Shah and our Urodynamics Nurse is Helen Butt.
