Caroline Osborne, Consultant Breast Surgeon

Miss Osborne is a specialist breast surgeon and joined the breast care team at YDH in January 2011. A graduate of University College London, she did her general surgical training in London and the South West of England. She was awarded a National Oncoplastic Fellowship in October 2009 and spent the time in Newcastle and Salisbury training in the techniques of breast reconstruction. Cardiology

Dr Geoff Brigden, Consultant Cardiologist

Consultant at Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust since 1994. Training: MBBS (The London Hospital) 1979, MRCP (UK) 1983, MD (London) 1991, FRCP 1999. Previously undertaken a wide training in medicine and cardiology including coronary angioplasty. His main interests include the investigation and treatment of coronary disease, heart failure and hypertension, but all aspects of general cardiology are represented as well as ‘grown-up’ congenital disease. Current technical expertise in interpretation of all non-invasive cardiological investigations, trans-oesophageal echocardiography, simple and complex pacing procedures and coronary angiography. Dr Andrew Broadley, Consultant Cardiologist

Dr Broadley trained in Cardiology in the United Kingdom and New Zealand (Cardiff, the South West, London and Auckland) and is a General Cardiologist who sees patients with all heart conditions. He specialises in assessing the heart using ultrasound or “echo” scans, CT scans and MRI scans. This sub-specialisation is known as “non-invasive imaging”. He has a particular interest in treating heart conditions in the elderly. Dr Broadley sees patients who have been referred to him by their GP (or another doctor for example another Consultant or an Aviation Medicine doctor). He is approved as a provider of cardiology services by all Private Medical Insurers except BUPA and AXA-PPP.

I spent my Registrar years on the Oxford Registrar programme gaining a wide range of experience in adult and paediatric ear, nose and throat disorders. My basic surgical training was undertaken in Oxford, followed by a period of research into pathogenic mechanisms in meningitis at the Institute of Molecular Medicine which was recognised for the award of MD. I was awarded the TWJ fellowship in otology and neurotology with Professor Fagan in Sydney for 2007 and subsequently spent one year in Bristol as a locum consultant prior to my appointment at Yeovil District Hospital/Dorset County Hospital in 2008. General surgery

Mr Nader Francis, General Surgeon MBChB FRCS PhD

Lead Surgeon for the Consortium, Consultant Colorectal Surgeon, Yeovil District Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Honorary Senior Lecturer, University of Bristol. Since taking up his post in Yeovil, Mr Francis has continued to consolidate and develop his laparoscopic colorectal practice. In addition to his role as a preceptor within the consortium, he also leads enhanced recovery training courses and has organised the first International conference on this topic. His research background including a PhD on laparoscopic surgical training and assessment with Sir Alfred Cuschieri, has underpinned his leadership of the development of a national ‘Training the Laparoscopic Colorectal Trainers’ course. Other research interests include leading a randomised controlled trial into method of pain control after laparoscopic colorectal resections and involvement in multi-centre RCTs on the benefits of enhanced recovery. Mr Francis is an honorary Senior Lecturer with the University of Bristol and co-ordinates the programme for 3rd year medical students.

“After graduating in Cairo (1991), I undertook my basic and higher surgical training in Dundee, a well established laparoscopic training centre. In addition to completing a PhD in laparoscopic surgical skills with Sir Alfred Cuschieri, I was also involved in course development and delivery in the Dundee skills training centre. I enhanced my skills in endoscopy and advanced open colorectal surgery at the Western General Hospital Colorectal Unit (Edinburgh). Finally, during a fellowship with Dr Antonio Lacy (Barcelona) I learned what could be achieved in a centre of excellence for laparoscopic colorectal and morbid obesity surgery”.

Mrs Brinda Shah joins us from King’s Hospital in London and her special interest is glaucoma. She has completed her fellowship in Glaucoma at Moorfields Eye Hospital in 2012 following which she did a further Glaucoma research and clinical fellowship in Glaucoma at the prestigious St Thomas’ Hospital in London.

Since Mr and Mrs Shah started working at Yeovil Hospital in the Spring of 2014 considerable time has been devoted to developing the most used pathways: cataract surgery, glaucoma management, care of patients with macular degeneration and diabetic eye diseases.

Matthew Hall BSc(Hons), MBChB, FRCS(Trauma & Orthopaedics)

Training: I graduated from Aberdeen University with my subsequent postgraduate Orthopaedic training in the South West Peninsula region working in Plymouth, Truro and Exeter. I then undertook specialist fellowship training in Australia for a year working in Melbourne and Perth focusing on all aspects of hip and knee replacement surgery as well as keyhole surgery of the knee. After returning to the UK I worked in the internationally renowned Exeter Hip Unit followed by further hip and knee fellowship at Plymouth for a year. I was appointed Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at Yeovil District Hospital in May 2013. I specialise in hip and knee replacement surgery, primary and revision, as well as keyhole surgery of the knee. During my fellowship I used patient specific knee replacement technology as well as regularly using computer navigation for knee replacements. Mr Cawrse has been working as a Consultant in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital since 2010 where he specialises in breast reconstruction, skin cancer (including sentinel node biopsy), head and neck reconstruction and microsurgery. This appointment involves additional clinics at Torbay Hospital and Yeovil Hospital.

He was educated in Middlesex before training in medicine at Newcastle University having previously secured a pure sciences degree at Nottingham University. He qualified as a doctor in 1996 followed by anatomy tutor and emergency department work at the University of Bristol and Bristol Royal Infirmary respectively. Surgical training at Frenchay Hospital, Bristol followed with membership of the Royal College of Surgeons of England awarded in 2000. Plastic surgery training commenced in 2000 gaining an extensive experience in all areas of plastic surgery at units in Bristol, Exeter and Perth, Western Australia. He passed the Intercollegiate Examination in Plastic Surgery- FRCS(Plast)- in 2008 and awarded Certificate of Completion of Training in 2010. He trained in cosmetic surgery as an aesthetic fellow in Bristol, Perth, Western Australia (The Mount Hospital, St John of God, Subiaco) and at the prestigious McIndoe Surgical Centre, East Grinstead.

In addition to training future plastic surgeons Mr Cawrse works closely with his surgical colleagues to improve and develop the breast reconstruction service and chairs an Enhanced Recovery team for this patient group. He is departmental lead for audit and has published widely. Mr Cawrse is a full member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and listed on the General Medical Council Specialist Register for plastic surgery.

Outside work he spends as much of his time as he can with his wife and young family. Mr Andrew Wilson MB ChB MRCS MD FRCS(Plast) - Consultant Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgeon

Mr Wilson has been a consultant plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon in Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital since 2011 with additional clinics in Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, and Yeovil District Hospital. His specialist areas of interest are breast reconstruction and advanced skin cancer treatment including melanoma in particular. He is a lead member of the Specialist Skin Multidisciplinary Teams at Musgrove Park Hospital / Yeovil District Hospital and Royal Devon & Exeter Hospital and is a member of Avon, Somerset, Wessex, Cancer Services Skin Site Specific Group. Mr Wilson is a core member of the South West Oncoplastic Breast Group, the main focus of which is teaching various forms of breast reconstruction. Mr Wilson is lead for plastic surgery research at RD&E and is currently involved in pioneering research into methods for assessing blood flow following microvascular reconstruction.

Following schooling in Northern Ireland, Mr Wilson attended Glasgow University Medical School. He undertook his Basic Surgical Training in the Glasgow teaching hospitals and passed his surgical membership exams (MRCS) in 2000, having spent time training in the renowned Canniesburn Plastic Surgery Unit in Glasgow. Thereafter, Mr Wilson won a two year scholarship of dedicated international research at the Blond McIndoe Centre working between University College London and Umeå University, Sweden looking into ways of improving nerve regeneration, subsequently gaining his higher post-graduate degree of Doctorate of Medicine (MD). Mr Wilson was appointed to the South West Regional Specialist Training Programme in Plastic Surgery in 2004, training in Frenchay Hospital, Bristol and RD&E, Exeter. During this time he passed the intercollegiate examination in plastic surgery –FRCS(Plast), and was awarded a Certificate of Completion of Surgical Training in plastic surgery in 2010. He is accredited on the General Medical Council’s specialist register for plastic surgery. Addition expertise in melanoma treatment was gained at the internationally renowned Melanoma Institute of Australia, Sydney, under the wing of Prof John Thompson for which Mr Wilson won a travelling fellowship award from British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic surgeons (BAPRAS). Mr Wilson also undertook a further fellowship in microsurgery for breast and head and neck reconstruction at the Royal Marsden Hospital 2010/11. His specific aesthetic fellowships were undertaken in Bristol (2006) and at the McIndoe Surgical Centre in 2010.
Mr Wilson is actively involved on teaching and has published and presented extensively both nationally and internationally during his time as a plastic surgeon from 2000 onwards. He regularly reviews articles, assessing their suitability for publication in the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Surgery (JPRAS). He has been teaching faculty at many educational meetings and is a full member of the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive & Aesthetic Sugeons (BAPRAS).

Radiology

Richard Clarkson MBChB - Consultant Clinical Radiologist

I am a Consultant Clinical Radiologist who graduated from Birmingham University MBChB in 1997. After passing my membership to the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 2000 I progressed to training in Radiology in Edinburgh, passing my Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists in 2005 prior to commencing as a Consultant in 2007. I am a full member of the British Society of Skeletal Radiologists.

I am a general radiologist with a particular interest in musculoskeletal radiology incorporating all orthopaedic imaging and sports medicine imaging including various interventional therapeutic techniques. I have worked with Yeovil Town Football Club since 2007 and was involved with the provision of imaging at both the London Olympics and Paralympics in 2012. I have been appointed an Honorary Clinical Tutor at the University of Bristol and have helped train local staff, army medical staff and national sports physicians in the use of musculoskeletal ultrasound.

Dr Malcolm Hay MB ChB, FFRad(D)(SA), MMed(RadD), FRCR - Consultant Clinical Radiologist

Dr Hay graduated from the University of Cape Town in 1978. He completed his post-graduate training in radiology at the University of Stellenbosch in 1987, obtaining the Fellowship of the Faculty of Radiologists of the College of Medicine of South Africa and a Master’s degree in diagnostic radiology from Stellenbosch University. He was appointed as a consultant clinical radiologist at Yeovil District Hospital in 1999 after gaining the Fellowship of the Royal College of Radiologists. He is on the specialist register of the GMC.

Dr Hay is a general diagnostic radiologist with special interests in CT and MRI imaging of the head, chest and abdomen including cancer imaging; CT imaging of the arteries of the heart (CT coronary angiography) and lungs (CT pulmonary angiography); high-resolution CT of the lungs; and musculo-skeletal ultrasound and MR (shoulder, hip, knee and ankle). He is the lead radiologist for the upper gastro-intestinal cancer multi-disciplinary team. He also provides a general ultrasound service as well as plain film reporting.

Dr Jeremy Hacking BSc MB BChir MRCP FRCR

I qualified from The Middlesex Hospital and Cambridge University in 1984 and also did my Radiology training in Cambridge. I was appointed to Yeovil in 1994 and have worked here ever since.

I am a general radiologist and use all modalities. I have a major interest in cross sectional imaging, particularly CT scanning in the field of oncology. I am also the lead for nuclear medicine.

 

Dr Cenydd Thomas, Consultant Radiologist. MA, MBBS, MRCP, FRCR

My medical training was at Oxford and Imperial College London at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. MRCP was awarded in 2001. Radiology training was obtained from the region of Wessex, primarily based in Southampton and the FRCR was awarded in 2007. I have been working in Yeovil District Hospital since 2010, my interests lie in cross-sectional imaging and musculoskeletal imaging. I have helped develop CT colonography and Cardiac CT services at Yeovil Hospital.

 

Respiratory medicine

Dr Rajendra Sinha, Consultant Physician

Specialises in respiratory medicine, particularly asthma, COPD, chronic cough of obscure aetiology and sleep related breathing disorders. Other Roles include:- Lead Clinician for COPD, TB and oxygen therapy, Undergraduate Clinical Examiner in Medicine (MB), Post Graduate Clinical Examiner in Medicine (MRCP) and Specialty Question writer in Respiratory Medicine. Dr Sally Knights, Consultant Rheumatologist

Dr Knights qualified from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, and trained in Rheumatology in London ( St Thomas’s) and Bristol, taking up her Consultant post in Yeovil in 2006. She has supported the development of the Rheumatology Unit in Yeovil, with the addition of a registrar ( for whom she is educational supervisor), infusion unit, and additional nursing staff since she arrived. She sees patients with all common rheumatological problems, including polymyalgia rheumatica and inflammatory arthritis, and also connective tissue diseases, such as lupus, Sjogren’s syndrome, scleroderma and vasculitis. Patients are usually seen within 1-2 weeks.
