What is physiotherapy?
Outpatient physiotherapists treat problems of the musculoskeletal system, ie. bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and nerves.
How will it help me?
The physiotherapist will assess you to see if the symptoms that you are feeling are caused by the musculoskeletal system. They will discuss possible treatment options, which may include exercise.
What will happen at my assessment?
The physiotherapist will need to assess the affected body part, so might ask you to undress. Please wear suitable underwear or bring a pair of shorts and/or a vest top.
Your first session will take 30–60 minutes and after this, follow-up appointments are 30 minutes.
Who will be there?
Physiotherapy is usually conducted on a one to one basis, but you are entitled to bring someone in with you. You can request to be treated by a therapist of the same sex if you wish.
Consent
Your consent to be assessed will be discussed with you at your initial assessment. The physiotherapist will then devise a treatment plan with you, which you can discuss and agree. You are free to withdraw from treatment at any time. Please discuss any concerns with your physiotherapist.
Students
We train physiotherapy students in the department and therefore your assessment and treatment may be by a student. They work under the close supervision of a qualified physiotherapist and you will be informed if your appointment is with a student. Please let us know if you have any concerns about your treatment.
How do I get there?
Your appointment is in the Physiotherapy Outpatient Department at Yeovil Hospital. When arriving at the hospital, come in through the Hospital main entrance (not the Emergency Department) and turn right. Continue through the outpatients department and follow the signs for Physiotherapy.
