The new link road connects Higher Kingston with the A37 Kingston. Higher Kingston will therefore become one-way westbound between Roping Road and the A37. This will alleviate congestion going to and from the hospital and make it easier to exit the hospital site and for residents to access their properties.

Traffic emerging onto Kingston, which is a 30mph dual carriageway, will be able to turn left and in a short distance can then head in all directions at the hospital roundabout.

The new multi-storey car park has 650 spaces. This includes 31 disabled blue-badge spaces, dedicated parent & child spaces and electric vehicle charging points.

This project was funded through our Strategic Estates Partnership with Interserve Prime and not by the NHS. Therefore money and resources are not being taken away from patient care. A private investor was secured to fund the project and this arrangement will allow the Trust to continue to receive the income from its parking fees. Part of the money received through parking fees will be used to pay the ‘mortgage’ with the investor, with the remainder funding further improvements to enhance patient care.

The multi-storey car park is for use for both staff and patients/visitors and its use will be shared to ensure the most efficient use of space. It will result in more parking spaces for both staff and visitors, improve the quality of the parking available and enhance the experience for those coming to the hospital.

The new car park uses a barrier-controlled ‘pay-on-exit’ system that is more efficient and customer-friendly, enabling motorists to pay only for the duration of their stay. Staff and permit holders access and exit the multi-storey car park using an automatic number plate recognition system.

Other parts of the site, including drop-off areas, are monitored and managed by Parking Eye through the use of automatic number-plate recognition cameras to ensure appropriate use and to maintain access for users, while the hospital will manage the operation of the new multi-storey car park.

The new car park is being funded through our Strategic Estates Partnership with Interserve Prime and not by the NHS. The parking charges are reviewed on a regular basis by the Trust and, to safely accommodate the hundreds of thousands of vehicles which will arrive on our site in the coming years, it is necessary for us to strike a fair balance between equity of access, and a sensible pricing structure, details of which can be found here .

The multi-storey car park will be open 24/7.

The car park has been designed to a high quality specification, ensuring it is safe, secure and accessible. These measures include better lighting and visibility, CCTV and security measures.

Motorists parking with blue badges will have protected use of 31 dedicated spaces on the ground floor of the new car park and are exempt from car parking charges. Tickets must be validated at main reception on exit by showing your blue badge.

Parking spaces in front of the main hospital entrance and outside the Women’s Hospital entrance will be solely available for drop off and pick up, offering a maximum of 20-minutes free parking; these will include some wider-bays for increased accessibility. These areas are monitored and managed by Parking Eye through the use of automatic number-plate recognition cameras.

There are three parent & child dedicated spaces, situated on the ground-floor of the multi-storey car park. Standard parking charges apply, details of which can be found here .

There are two charging points for electric vehicles, situated on the ground-floor, right-hand side of the multi-storey car park. Standard parking charges and charging tariff apply, details of which can be found here .

Some patients and visitors are eligible for exemption from parking charges. These apply to:

  • Blue badge holders
  • Registered carers
  • SCBU (Special Care Baby Unit) parents or guardians
  • Mothers breastfeeding children staying overnight
  • Parents of children (under 18) staying on the children’s ward between 7.30pm and 8am
  • Frequent outpatient attenders defined as more than three visits in a month (30 days)
  • Visitors conducting bedside vigils
  • Cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or active clinical treatments, including outpatient visits within an active treatment phase. Standard charges apply to follow-up visits, attendance to health & wellbeing events, holistic needs assessments.

If you lose your parking ticket there is a lost ticket function on both pay stations. This will charge the day rate (which is £12.50), and then produce a ticket.
