Yeovil Hospital is offering support to patients with osteoporosis with a free educational talk for those interested in learning more about the condition.
The talk, by Clare Cockill, Osteoporosis and Fracture Liaison Nurse Specialist, is being held on Monday 10 April between 2pm and 4.15pm in the Academy on Level 4 of Yeovil Hospital.
The session is aimed at people who are being treated for, or who are newly diagnosed with, osteoporosis and osteopenia. Attendees will have the chance to learn about how osteoporosis and osteopenia are diagnosed, what the bone density results mean, risk factors, treatments, and any potential problems. There will also be information on how to improve bone health, including advice on strength and balance exercises from a physiotherapist.
Tea and coffee will be provided by the local National Osteoporosis Support Group who are helping to host the session. They are also able to offer more information about osteoporosis and be able to answer any questions.
Nurse Specialist and session leader Clare said: “It is important to identify osteoporosis or an increased risk of fracture early because there are good treatments available. These can reduce the risk of having osteoporotic fractures in the future. If you have already had a fracture that has happened following a slip, trip or fall over the age of 50 years then you may be at increased risk of further fractures. You could also be at risk if you have some medical conditions or if you have to take certain drugs such as prednisolone for more than three months.
“There are now specific tools to help assess fracture risk and identify those at higher risk for bone density scanning and/or treatment. Your GP can carry out an on-line fracture risk assessment to estimate your risk of fracture over the next 10 years to see whether you are at increased risk of fracture. They can also decide if you would benefit from a referral for a risk assessment to reduce your risk of falling because falls are the cause of most fractures. Fractures in the spine can be caused by falls or through everyday activities such as bending, lifting and twisting.”
Places can be booked on the session by contacting Clare on 01935 384 569 or by emailing FLS.Team@ydh.nhs.uk The talks are popular and booking a place is recommended as numbers are limited at each session.
