Yeovil Hospital Midwife and organiser of the Rainbow Team Amy Simpson was surprised live on air for being Heart FM’s Christmas Hero on Wednesday 9 December.
Throughout December, Heart FM has been celebrating a hero who has made a real difference in someone’s life and, out of the hundreds of daily nominations, Amy was nominated by Mum Charlotte Wilton for supporting her through an emotional and difficult time during Charlotte’s latest pregnancy after experiencing the painful loss of her Angel Baby.
Charlotte said: “Amy has just been simply amazing. She was a familiar face that became a friend and worked with me throughout all of my pregnancies. She did so much for me during my pregnancy with Ciara, she got me all the support I needed and was honestly there for me throughout everything, even during labour. I nominated her for Heart’s Christmas Heroes because I wanted her to be recognised for everything she has done for me. I also wanted to give the Yeovil Hospital Rainbow Team recognition for the incredibly important work all of the team do for so many mums in a similar position to me. I have an amazing connection with Amy and couldn’t be more grateful to her or the team.”
Amy said: “I was overwhelmed when I heard Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden talking to me. Charlotte had told me I was needed on a Skype call with her that she had forgotten to inform me of and then Jamie and Amanda came on. It was amazing to be nominated and win, but I was really just doing my job. I am proud to be able to provide the best care for our mothers both in and outside of the Trust.”
Amy’s role within Yeovil Hospital is to aid and support mothers during childbirth. However, ten months ago she set up the Yeovil Hospital Rainbow Team, who are the main port of call for families who are expecting a Rainbow Baby, (the next child to be born after a pregnancy loss). Our team consists of five dedicated midwives who on top of their daily jobs work closely with families as their personal midwife and confidant.
Amy added: “Birth can be difficult for any mother, needless to say one who has previously experienced a loss within their family. The Rainbow Team get to know the stories behind our mums and become more than just a clinician for them. We are there to hold their hands through every step and get them any help they might need, we become friends.”
