The excellent care and treatment given to a 78 year old man by colleagues at Yeovil and Wincanton hospitals was in the spotlight on Friday (24 July 2020).
ITV Westcountry visited Wincanton Hospital to meet David, who is currently recovering from COVID-19 having spent 125 days in hospital since mid-March.
In total David spent 80 days in intensive care at Yeovil Hospital, being on a ventilator for two months. This last month, David moved to continue his recovery under the care of our colleagues at Wincanton Hospital.
It all began on 21 March when David felt ill so his family called for an ambulance.
“I got into the ambulance and that is the last thing I can remember,” said David.
“The next thing I knew I was in a hospital bed about two months further on. It was so frightening because I couldn’t move and I couldn’t talk.”
While at Yeovil Hospital, David struck up a friendship with caring nursing associate Hannah Legg, who he said helped him through his darkest days. This was particularly important given the strict restrictions on visiting.
David said: “Hannah would come to my bedside on her break and stay with me and take my hand because I had no one else there. She’s like another daughter to me now!”
Hannah said: “I remember sitting and holding his hand and thinking he was going to leave, he was extremely poorly. I still can’t believe he’s done so well. It’s really heartwarming.”
David is continuing his recovery at Wincanton Community Hospital and has had nothing but praise for all the staff who have cared for him throughout the last few months.
He’s now hoping to leave hospital soon with a package of care from our community services team.
We are so proud of all our colleagues for the way they have cared for David, showing how we work together with the patient at the centre of everything we do.
Get well soon David!
