A showcase of embroidery and applique is now on show at Yeovil Hospital’s outpatient gallery, by textile artist Rebecca Bruton.
The ‘Flights of Fancy’ textual display features a new bird collection, specifically created for Yeovil Hospital. Rebecca chose to focus her creativity on birds throughout ‘lockdown’ not just for their aesthetic beauty but also as they symbolise so much to people, including freedom. The artwork began with a piece featuring a nightingale, in recognition of the ‘Nightingale Hospital’ built in Bristol to help the South West manage with the impact of the pandemic, and in memory of Florence Nightingale on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of her birth.
Yeovil Hospital’s Art Coordinator Caroline Barnes said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to welcome back Rebecca and her gorgeous embroidery. We really hope that patients, staff and carers will enjoy these uplifting pictures created especially for our hospital”
Rebecca specialises in free motion embroidery and applique to build up vibrant textile artworks. By using a sewing machine as a tool to mix colours and ‘paint’ her work with a free-hand style using threads and vintage fabrics.
Rebecca was named the Somerset Art Works Emerging Artist of 2018. Her work is now featured in multiple publications and exhibiting across the UK and in global projects.
The ‘Flights of Fancy’ exhibition will be on show from Wednesday the 19 August to Sunday 1 November 2020 in the Outpatients gallery on level 3.
