You are now ready to go home after your surgery

Please follow the advice below to continue your recovery in the best way.

What to expect

  • Most people will feel tired for a few weeks after surgery. This is normal after a major operation and should settle in time. If it continues for more than a few weeks it may be worth asking your GP for a blood test.
  • Swelling and bruising around your hip is normal and can persist for weeks after surgery. It is common for the swelling and bruising to appear anywhere in the leg. It may be worse and more noticeable in the lower leg and around the ankle. The swelling will usually increase throughout the day and decrease overnight.
  • The wound dressing should remain in place and be removed when you return for your appointment at around two weeks. If your wound is ‘oozy’ we may arrange to see you before this.

Physiotherapy and activity

To get the best from your hip replacement in the long term, you must allow the hip to heal and return to strength in the early stages.

It is very important not to do too much too soon.

  • Try to do several short walks a day but also make sure to have periods of rest. This should include time with your legs elevated to help control the swelling in your lower legs.
  • Please refer to your booklet for more detail on the physiotherapy exercises you should undertake several times a day.

Please contact us for further advice if you experience the following:

  • Increased swelling and/or redness around the wound.
  • Change in colour, amount or odour of any discharge from the wound.
  • Oozing blood and fluid from your wound that requires a dressing change.
  • Swelling, pain or redness in your calf that does not reduce overnight or is becoming steadily worse.
