Yeovil Hospital is inviting people across South Somerset and Dorset to join them as nominations for public governors open today.
Governors are an important part of an NHS Foundation Trust and represent the interests of the public. They work with the Board of Directors to influence and produce the Trust’s future plans. They also appoint and hold Non-Executive Directors to account and help shape the strategy and key decisions of the hospital.
Elected governors serve terms of three years, up to a maximum of three terms. The role is voluntary.
Nominations are now open for the following governor constituencies:
- Greater Yeovil
- South Somerset (South & West)
- South Somerset (North & East)
- Dorset
- Mendip
- Rest of Somerset & England
John Park has been a public governor for Dorset at Yeovil Hospital for the last eight years, the Lead Governor for over three of those years, and is retiring in the summer. He said of the role:
“I have very much enjoyed being a governor at YDH. The hospital has faced and is still facing a challenging time, with demand growing faster than budgets and changes in the services we need as a community, especially as our population gets older. This means that YDH has had to make some significant changes in the way it works. As a governor I have been able to contribute to these developments and to represent people in my own constituency, and all those served by the hospital, in making sure that changes take into account our local needs, always keeping the well-being of patients as the highest priority. My work as a governor has been very rewarding.
“I would thoroughly recommend anyone interested in having an excellent hospital in Yeovil to put themselves forward for election.”
There are many opportunities for governors to get involved in the running of the hospital but their key commitments are:
- Four Council of Governors meetings each year
- Optional attendance on one of the quarterly governor working groups
- Optional attendance at Yeovil Hospital Board of Directors meetings (once each year)
- Optional attendance at quarterly sub-committees of the Board of Directors.
