Yeovil Hospital is inviting people across south Somerset and Dorset to join them as nominations for three public governors open this week.
Governors are an important part of an NHS Foundation Trust and represent the interests of the public. They work with the Board of Directors to influence and produce the Trust’s future plans. They also appoint and hold Non-Executive Directors to account and help shape the strategy and key decisions of the hospital.
Elected governors serve terms of three years, up to a maximum of three terms. The role is voluntary.
Nominations are now open for the following governor constituencies:
- Dorset
- Greater Yeovil
- South Somerset (South and West)
Ian Fawcett has been a public governor for Dorset at Yeovil Hospital for the last nine years and is now retiring at the end of his three terms. He said of the role: “Being a governor has been an interesting and stimulating experience. As a governor, I’ve been able to have a direct influence on the many improvements that the hospital has made in areas such as clinical services and hospital catering for patients and staff. My focus has been on helping to make the experience of patients and visitors to the hospital as enjoyable as possible during what, for many, can be a difficult and worrying time, and that has been hugely rewarding.
“I would thoroughly recommend anyone interested in becoming a governor at Yeovil Hospital to put themselves forward for nomination.”
There are many opportunities for governors to get involved in the running of the hospital but their key commitments are:
- Four Council of Governors meetings each year
- Optional attendance on one of the quarterly governor working groups
- Optional attendance at Yeovil Hospital Board of Directors meetings (once each year)
- Optional attendance at quarterly sub-committees of the Board of Directors.
Anyone living in Dorset; Greater Yeovil or South Somerset (South and West: Chard, Crewkerne, East or West Coker Ilminster, Montacute, Odcombe, South Petherton, Stoke-Sub-Hamdon and Tintinhull areas), is eligible to apply to become a governor.
If you’d like the chance to help shape local healthcare services, a nomination form is available in one of the following ways:
